My 25 of 2017

I tried to get this list out last weekend, but this has officially been the most difficult year to get my favorites down to 25 songs. Keep in mind I’ve been officially doing this since 2011, and also there was a lot of forgettable music this year. But there was a ton of great stuff. There was so much great stuff, in fact, that some of my favorite artists who came out with albums this year (Foo Fighters, the Killers to name two) didn’t have a tune that made the cut. Tough year, y’all. But here are my 25 favorite songs of 2017. Share yours.

25. “Tummy Ache” — Diet Cig
Seems like your basic 21st century “girl power” song, but it’s so catchy and I really like the lead singer’s voice. it reminded me of Veruca Salt (the band, not the Willy Wonka character), and that’s never a bad thing.

24. “Fluid” — Bus Vipers
Not my typical jam, but it’s so catchy and singable. I just kept finding myself listening to it, going back to it. It’s a fun song.

23. “Can We Hang On?” — Cold War Kids
You know it’s a tough year when CWK are in the 20s. But that’s what it was. The new album was good, but if it follows in line with other albums, it gets better over time. Still in my top 5 favorite current bands.

22. “You Know Me Better” — J Roddy Walston and the Business
Love J Roddy. The new album is good, still warming up to it, but this track jumped off the album right away. It’s just a fun jam and I love their sound.

21. “I’m So Free” — Beck
Beck is in the running for the best album I downloaded this year. It’s incredibly upbeat and poppy and this song is my favorite, which could change any day. It’s loaded.

20. “Alta” — Ty Segall
I love Ty Segall and this is a great song. Should have been higher, but I didn’t know what to knock down. Sounds like he collaborated with Jack White on this one, but he didn’t. Or did he?

19. “Name For You” — The Shins
I unapologetically love the Shins. I will buy everything they ever put out and I missed my chance last month to see them live. I never know when their next album will be their last, but I’m betting this is it.  But it’s ok, because James Mercer will still be around on some level with a new project.

18. “Ran” — Future Islands
I don’t know a ton about Future Islands, but I like everything I’ve heard and I love the lead singer’s voice. And this is a fun song to drive to and crank. Could have been on an 80s movie montage.

17. “Disguise” — Day Wave
This too, is a great album. On any given day I could have a different song. But this one is so hauntingly beautiful. The topic seems to be the way we all keep ourselves hidden behind masks for fear of rejection. I think we can all relate to that on some level.

16. “I Got Your Message” — Hideout
This song just kept growing on me. The first time I heard it, I couldn’t turn it off fast enough. But then I listened to it over and over. And it’s just catchy. And then I found out that the lead is in the band Cults, or at least in the live band. And it’s got a great line in it
“You're making big decisions
But nobody is there
Your painted nails sailing
Through the ocean of your hair”

Pretty cool I guess.

15. “Tell The Truth” — Dams of the West
Chris Tomson is … I’m sorry … WAS the drummer for Vampire Weekend, and this has led me to finally come to terms with the fact that they are never getting back together. And yet, this song is so good I put it in the top 15. I guess I’ll take what I can get. Meanwhile, Ezra Koenig is nowhere to be heard. That makes me sad, friends. Moral of the story is you need to go see your favorite bands when you get the chance, because you may never get another.

14. “I Saw You Close Your Eyes” — Local Natives
I’m all on board with these guys. If you doubt, go look up their live performance of “Coins” on the YouTubes. This song was a single that was released this year. I’ll be seeing them. I’ll let you know how it goes.

13. “Matter of Time” — Surfer Blood
One of my top 10 fave bands. They did not disappoint live. And they hung out after the show and took pics with us and signed the setlist for me and they are just awesome. And John Paul just walked out into the crowd and sang with us. Rocking good time and rocking great band. And also, “new” guitarist Mike McCleary looks just like Paul Rudd. Look it up.

12. “Bad Ones” — Matthew Dear (feat. Teagan and Sara)
I do not know anything about Matthew Dear, and I do not particularly listen to Teagan and Sara, but I can’t stop listening to this song. No idea why. Honestly no idea. But it gets stuck in my head for days on end, so that says something.

11. “Flies on the Sun” — Wolf Parade
Just so you know, I WILL be seeing Wolf Parade in January. And I WILL be shaking/hugging Dan Boeckner. And my life WILL be complete. I love Dan Boeckner. He’s got so many projects going, I have  no idea how or if he sleeps. I have a feeling he doesn’t.

10. “A Violent Noise” — The xx
I’ve said for a while that this was the best album I downloaded all year. And I also missed my chance to see them live. And Chaney was going to go with me. This is a beautiful haunting song. And speaking of my kids not going to concerts, I have offered both of them the invitation to go see the Killers with me in January and neither of them are super psyched. Someone please talk some sense into my children or take their ticket.

9. “Guilty Party” — The National
I love the National. Matt Berninger may have my favorite voice in music. In fact, I sing every song in his voice. I would love to see them do an album where they cover a bunch of fluffy pop songs. Would anything seriously be funnier than hearing Matt sing Taylor Swift’s “22” ? I submit there would not be. But for real, this song puts me straight in a mood. So when I’m melancholy for a month, just know they came out with a new album. I’ll try to warn everyone.

8. “Still Waking Up” — Tim Darcy
Tim Darcy is the front man for the band Ought, and I have to say I like his solo stuff better thus far. This song is a classic. It has a very Marshall Crenshaw feel to it. And I love Marshall Crenshaw so …

7. “Feel It Still” — Portugal. The Man
I am currently tempted to replace this with “Live in the Moment” which is my current favorite song off that album. I will say that this is probably my favorite album front to back from this year. But I don’t want to be pretentious and even though this is completely played out, it’s a fun song. And it’s fun to sing and I’m so thankful they have a hit song that preteen girls like so they can jack up the ticket price. But I’m not bitter.

6. “Lookers” — The Menzingers
This song rocks. It’s fun to drive to and jam out on. It kinda has that radio punk vibe to it. I don’t know much about that, but I love the song. I had no idea before this that Jersey girls were always total heartbreakers.

5. “Highway Tune” — Greta Van Fleet
THIS. BAND. IS. AWESOME. Thank you to my friend Jason for letting me know about these guys. It took me about 45 seconds to put them on the bucket list. This song rocks so hard I can’t drive the speed limit when I listen to it, so be warned. Also, the lead singer sounds like Ann Wilson and Robert Plant had a baby and he grew up to be a rock star.

4. “Wanted Woman / AC/DC” — Larkin Poe
I don’t want to imply that I know the Lovell sisters personally, but we are best friends. And Chaney loves them. When I was trying to convince her our upcoming move to TN would be a good one, I reminded her that Rebecca and Megan live in Nashville. And she was immediately on board. But seriously, we went to see them a few months ago and they signed autographs for Chaney, took several pictures with her and PUT IT ON THEIR INSTAGRAM! Chaney almost passed out. These ladies can rock, and they closed their set that night with the second half of this song. I asked Rebecca on the way out what it was because I didn’t recognize it and she told me it was a new song they’re trying out called “AC/DC.” I told her I hope it’s on the new album and …….. well, I guess we are best friends.

3. “Baby Luv” — Nilüfer Yanya
This girl is gonna be big. She’s immensely talented and this song is incredibly and gorgeously haunting. So smooth and her voice just kills it.

2. “The Maze” — Manchester Orchestra
So here we are. This is a tough decision. This is the first song on their new album and I’ve heard it’s about Andy Hull’s daughter and the fact that he’s someone’s dad and overwhelmed by it and I relate so much to it and it makes me think of when my kids were little and I wish I had this song back then and I choke up every time I listen to it and I love Andy Hull’s voice. Oh dear … it has to be number one, right?

1. “The Way You Used To Do” — Queens of the Stone Age
Wrong. I’ve been going back and forth listening to this song and the MO song, and I’m sorry, but this has been my jam all year. I’m not going back now. When I want to groove, I turn on this jam. And QotSA have waited a long time to be number one on my list. So here they are. Deservedly. I’m going to go ahead and put my list out now before I change my mind.

So there you have it, my favorite 25 songs of the year 2017, which turned out to be a great year for music. Share your list. I love hearing new stuff. Thanks to everyone who loves me enough to keep sending me new music. Please don’t stop doing that. I love hearing new stuff. Hope you all have a great Christmas and your 2018 is full of more great music.

#REDEMPTION

1993, 2005, 2009, 2017.

I’ve seen UNC win four championships. Well, I’ve watched the 1982 game on YouTube, but I didn’t see that one live. In fact, I wasn’t really even a UNC fan back then. I didn’t even watch basketball. I liked a lot of teams actually, before finally jumping on the Carolina bandwagon and staying there. No, I didn’t grow up in NC. No, I am not a UNC alum. No, my family did not pass down my fanhood. I simply picked a team because they were good and always on TV, and at some point you have to choose one you’re going to root for. So I did. And that’s the story of that.

Now my goal is to pass that on to my kids so that when they’re asked when they became UNC fans, they can honestly say they were born into it. So I don’t mind being first generation and taking the hit for jumping on the bandwagon. I can handle it. Being a Carolina fan is easy, so I’m not seeking credit from anyone.

My older daughter is the UNC junkie. We watch games together, keep up with recruiting, study the history of the team. She’s all in and I love it. Now my younger daughter doesn’t get left out. She’s just not as passionate. She’s more into music and my concert buddy. In fact, she asked me if I would take her to see The xx and I’m still weeping tears of joy. But I’m getting off track … and sentimental.

So Lily and I went to the National Championship game last year in Houston. After all, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I had seen UNC win three championships. I had run down the street like an idiot each time. I wanted my daughter to experience that. So we went. And if you wait until the day of the event, you can get tickets cheap. Just in case you are thinking of going. So we went, and UNC lost. Great game. Terrible ending. We were sitting about 30 rows behind Kris Jenkins as he rose up to take that shot and my head just dropped. The one guy on the floor you can’t let get a clean look got a clean look. And he drained it.

So we walked out that night with me having to help her hold back tears. She wanted to leave with about 2 minutes left and the Heels down 10. But I told her we don’t leave. That was lesson one. Then we saw Marcus Paige hit what should have been the iconic shot of the final, and I remember telling her, “We just need to play defense for 4.7 seconds. If this game goes into overtime, we’re going to win.” And then Jenkins happened, and this is still the coolest thing I’ve ever seen a coach do, even though it’s for the other team.

So Nova wins, and immediately she wanted to leave. “No,” I said. “We’re going to let them have their moment. They’ve waited 35 years for this. Let them have their moment. Then we’ll quietly slip out.” That was lesson two. What happened after that was unreal. I can’t tell you how classy the Villanova fans were. They could tell she’d been crying. One dad even stopped me and gave me that “man, that’s tough” look that dads give each other to acknowledge the one thing dads fear the most … not being able to fix something. So instead of fixing it, you have to show them how to handle it. And I can say now, not knowing at the time, but that was the best thing that could possibly have happened. Think about it. We got to see Marcus Paige, who had not had a super great senior year (by his standards), be clutch again. We got to see him put the team on his back and will them back from despair. And we got to see UNC be something they’re not usually accused of: TOUGH. They fought back when I’m so used to them dropping their shoulders and kind of pouting. We got to see a classic game with a classy fan base. One guy even hugged me and told me that was the greatest game he’s ever seen and Marcus Paige is the man and lots of other things. It was good for Lily to see that. Fans being respectful. You don’t see it much outside the arena. You see the fans burning couches in the street or tossing TVs out windows. What you see inside the arena are fans who are true to their team and tip the cap to the opposition. At least that’s what we saw. And I was thankful.

It was that night that I said, “That’s it. I don’t care if they play on the moon. The next time UNC is in the championship game, we’re going. Period.” And I knew at the time they had a realistic shot of going back the very next April. But I clearly wasn't seriously thinking that was going to happen. I mean, honestly, who gets a chance to redeem themselves the very next year with nearly the exact same team?

Fast forward to Phoenix.

UNC had been winning games in the tournament in very un-UNC fashion. They were ugly wins. But usually when you win a championship you have to win a game you should have lost. This is the part where I apologize to all the Arkansas fans I know. I don’t know what to say other than college basketball officiating is the worst of any sport in this country. I always tell my kids, “Even if the refs grab the mic and tell everyone in the building their mission is to make sure you don’t win, you never blame the refs. Losers make excuses. Winners make themselves better.” Having said that, I told my friend Casey that if he wanted to go on social media and blast the refs for that game, I would back up everything he said. It was horrible.

Again, having said that, it made me think that maybe this was UNC’s year. I mean, they were doing anything they had to do to win games. It’s like they actually fought, which is not something I’m used to. And they started locking people up on defense, which I’m not used to either. I’m used to games in the 80s or 90s, letting teams have a layup here or there just to coax them into running with us. And I like that brand of basketball. But I also like winning. I like toughness and determination and hustle. And UNC was doing it. They were doing what it took to win. First there was Arkansas, then if that Kentucky game goes into OT, I think UNC was done. But it didn’t. They found a way. And then they tried to give away the Oregon game and couldn’t. That’s when you start thinking the shirt I got in the mail and wore the day we played our first game in the tourney was working the same way the snow globes did in 2009. And if you don't know that story, it's a good one too.

So I felt good about going to Phoenix. I felt even better when I met Phil Ford. Yes, that Phil Ford. We also met Matt Doherty who was awesome and talked to Lily. It meant so much for me to see her meet some of the legends and really embrace the history of the team. Of course, she had already met Marcus Paige the year before, so I’m not sure she was star struck at that point. And so there we are, nip and tuck the whole way, both teams equally deserving to win this title. And all I could think is that I don’t want to have that talk again this year. I don’t want this to be a character-building experience. That’s what last year was for. I want to watch my team win a championship with my daughter. I want her to know what that’s like. So then it happened. I watched Isaiah hit that shot to put UNC up 3 and then Gonzaga calls a timeout. Game still isn’t over. There are like 21 seconds left, and a lot can happen in 21 seconds. Then the guy two rows in front of me is talking about fouling and I argued with him, “We can’t hit free throws. All we need is for them to hit two, foul us, we brick ours and then they have the ball with a chance to win. At least if they hit a three, we still have a chance to win or we go into OT with their big guy one foul from being out and their PG with a bum ankle.” He turned around and DID NOT high five me after the game. Hate it when I do that, but I was so nervous, and when I’m nervous I really hate people regurgitating studio coach, cookie cutter strategy. You have to know what’s going on right now. You have to know your team. You have to know how the game is flowing or not and make a decision not based on a chart, but on your gut. Anyway, I’m sorry. I’m getting distracted again.

So there we stand, in a sea of Carolina blue, with everyone on their feet. The teams walk back out and I am just praying for one stop. Just one more stop and I’ll never ask for anything ever again, or at least until next year’s game at Cameron. Everything felt like it was going in slow motion all night, and suddenly everything just came down to 21.6. Meeks had a block, Berry has the ball and Jackson is dunking the game clincher with just over 11 seconds left. Then Meeks is stealing a pass and Berry is getting fouled and that’s when it hit me: “Holy cow. We’re going to win the national championship.” I turned to Lily and we embraced. I slung her around like a rag doll screaming “Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! We did it! We’re going to win!” like a moron. I admit I had not practiced for that moment. I don’t remember if I cried, but I felt like I would. The feeling was unreal and indescribable. I wanted that for her. I honestly did. And the fact that we’re both so passionate about something, which is more often than not a bad thing, made the experience truly a once in a lifetime. But I honestly don’t think it would have been as amazing if it hadn’t been for the heartbreak the year before. There were more lessons to be learned.

For example, when things don’t go your way, you work harder. You set a goal and you do anything to achieve that goal. People aren’t just going to say, “Oh you lost in such heartbreaking fashion last year. Why don’t we just give you the 2017 trophy as a consolation?” Nope. You have to work. How many teams get a second chance like that? It wasn’t luck. They worked for it. You want something? Work for it.

The other lesson was how to win with class. “My team winning is enough for me. People are going to accuse you of being on the bandwagon. So what. People are going to say the refs gave it to you. So what. People are going to say all sorts of things. So what. My team won. I have the t-shirt to prove it. That’s all that matters. There’s no need to rub anyone’s face in it. There is literally nothing to be gained from talking trash. My team won. It feels good. That’s what matters. Remember what it felt like last year? That’s what 67 other fanbases are feeling. Consider that and show some class.” I said something like that. It was pretty close anyway. So when we walked out that night, we saw Gonzaga fans and we felt their pain. So we walked out smiling but respectful. And haven’t stopped smiling since.

“Being gracious when you win or lose is what makes you a good fan. People don’t mind being around you and even root for you … even though they may not even like your team.” I told Lily this after seeing all her friends Snapchat and text her with positive messages. After the game, I saw my phone had blown up (in a good way). And while I’m thinking about it, I should probably mention that I turn my phone off during games. So I’m not purposely ignoring anyone who may  be trying to reach me. This all goes back to Cary Clay and that dumb “one ring” thing we had going on years ago. One day I’ll have to write a post about that, because it is kind of funny, at least when it’s not you on the other end. But I’m getting off track again. What I was teaching Lily is that when you are a good fan, people respect you even though they may not like your team. And when people are rooting for you, that means a lot. I told her afterward that I would have felt terrible if the Heels had lost just knowing how many people were rooting for them on account of the two of us. We certainly have great friends and I want to thank everyone who texted or messaged me in any way. You’re awesome and I hope all your dreams come true (unless you’re a dook fan, sorry Lacy). I also want to thank everyone for enduring my fixation on "The ceiling is the roof." I would also like to apologize in advance because I will literally never stop saying it. It will be my battle cry for this year as long as I live. It's just funny. I love Jordan so much, but that is comedy gold y'all. Sorry. Got sidetracked again.

I get a lot of flack for how much I love sports, and I admit, it’s probably not good for my health. But sports presents opportunities to teach so many lessons that translate on so many levels. I think we may have learned them all in just one calendar year. I’ll probably stop being so obnoxious about this one day, but this is a first for me, because this one wasn’t about me. And that makes it so much sweeter. Feels a lot like redemption.

My 25 of 2016

Sorry I lied to everyone. I wanted to have this list out this past Friday, but The xx messed everyone up with their late entry and I totally had to reshuffle. The truth is, this was the hardest year to pick a true number one, as any of my top 8 have, at some point, held that cherished position. However, you have to go with something at some point, and so here it is. As always, I encourage everyone to make a favorites list and share with the world, if for no other reason that just because it’s fun. So here it is, my favorite 25 songs of 2016.

25. “The Palest of Them All” — Lawrence Arabia
I don’t know much about this dude, except he’s kind of odd and had one of the best songs a couple years ago called “Apple Pie Bed” which I still have no clue about the meaning of. Either way, it’s a nice little song. Light little ditty that easily can get stuck in your head all day.
24. Real Love Baby” — Father John Misty
Ok, forgive me. I don’t listen to a lot of Fleet Foxes, but are they even still a thing? I feel like he’s had a lot more commercial success as a solo artist, and I think he’s the drummer. Can someone help me out here? If he’s the drummer, I guess that explains why I like him so much. Everyone knows the drummer is the key to any great band.
23. “QB Sneak” — Active Bird Community
I think these guys are pretty young, but I like their sound. Another one of those songs that at first blush, I didn’t think much of. But I kept hearing it and found myself singing it throughout the day. They’ve got some good music. Still don’t know anything about them.
22. “Can’t Have Them" — Hockey Dad
This band is from New Zealand, which is close to Australia, right? That explains this then. Actually, the last few years I’ve kinda gotten into that surf rock sound. Wavves, Surfer Blood, Cayucas … I find myself drawn to their music. This group falls in line with that ilk. Great album, by the way.
21. “First World Problem” — Unknown Mortal Orchestra
I think this is one of those bands that is just like one guy and studio musicians. I have a chance to see them a couple years ago, but I bailed, so I feel like I missed out. I think there is a new album in the works. The last one was amazing. Looking forward to more.
20. “All I Ever Wonder” — St. Paul and the Broken Bones
This is why you go to $12 concerts by yourself, kids. Went to see them at the Continental Club three years ago, maybe? Yeah, they hung out after an amazing show and talked to a group of people for about an hour. I got to meet Paul Janeway and he’s one of the nicest guys. We talked about Alabama and barbecue and he wanted to hang out more, but I had to go. It was awkward. But seriously, they put on one of the most amazingly intense live shows I’ve ever seen. And they opened for the Stones a year after that. I don’t think I’ll get to see them for $12 anymore. I bet we’ll still hang out, though.
19. “Berlin Got Blurry” — Parquet Courts
Again, a band I know nothing about. I will say the bass line to this songs totally reminds me of that “Jesus is a Friend of Mine” video on the YouTubes. If you haven't seen it, listen to it and then listen to this song and see if I’m close to right. Either way, it’s a smooth song.
18. “Mascara” — Megan Nicole
First, don’t judge me. Second, I’ve always thought The National should do an album of pop song covers. They could do some T-Swift, maybe some Miley. I don’t know. It just makes me laugh to think about. So when you listen to this song, imagine it Matt Berninger singing it and laugh away.
17. “I Don’t Care About You” — Lake Street Dive
Real conversation between me and my (kinda) friend, Leigh Ann.
Me: “Hey, you should listen to this band Lake Street Dive”
LA: “I told you that months ago.”
Me: “Did you? I guess I wasn’t listening.”
LA: “I’m used to it. You never listen to anything I say.”
Me: “What?”
16. “Every Time I’m Ready To Hug” — Ra Ra Riot
Finally got to see them this year, and of course it’s post-Alexandra Lawn, but whatever. I’m not bitter. The drummer is amazing. He killed it all night. And they have a great sound and put on a really good show. Seriously “Can You Tell” is one of my all-time favorite songs and probably always will be. Side note: If you need someone to go to a concert with you, might I suggest inviting Robyn Archer? You will definitely get to the front of the stage. I seriously don’t know how she does it. It’s like Jedi powers or something.
15. “Drugs” — Dreamers
Ok, so this song is not literally about drugs. It’s a metaphor. You’re just going to have to take the band’s word for that. It’s a pretty rocking song, and the list needed some rock desperately after that Megan Nicole fiasco.
14. “Get Out” — Frightened Rabbit
If I’m not mistaken, they toured with Caveman, and they came to Houston. And I was not there. So that’s on me. This is just one of those songs that make you think about something you lost and is honestly pretty depressing. Maybe The National will cover it.
13. “Never Going Back” — Caveman
If I’m not mistaken, they toured with Frightened Rabbit, and they came to Houston. And I was not there. So that’s on me. The more I listen to them, the more I like them. I really don’t know what it is about this song. It just stays with me, haunts me, depresses me. Maybe The National will cover it.
12. “Do You Remember” — St. Lucia
Can you believe this song fell out of the top ten? It was in the top five all summer. That shows you why it was so hard to finish this list. Lots more late entries this year than in previous years. Listen to this song and try to stay still. Can’t do it, can you? The whole album is like this.
11. “The Sound” — The 1975
Ok, this is a really fun song. They have a lot of really fun songs. But then you listen to some of them and you’re like “Guys …… really?” Then I have to explain to the girls why we can’t listen to the rest of the album. Or why I can’t take them to a concert. I’m not ticky tacky when it comes to music, but there’s a point at which it just becomes unnecessary and forced. Ladies and gentlemen … The 1975.
10. “Radio of Lips” — The Joy Formidable
I will buy anything they put out. They rock and the lead singer’s name is Ritzy. She’s amazing and an amazing guitarist. And their drummer is so unreal. YouTube the live version of “Whirring” and tell me I’m not right. There is also an acoustic version of this song on the YouTubes and it’s pretty amazing as well. They’re on my bucket list to go see. By the way, they were also in Houston in October, but I had to pick between them and Costello, and … well, you know. Come on … it’s Elvis Costello, guys.
9. “Coins” — Local Natives
This is a band that apparently I’m going to have to get to know, which is not uncommon. I kind of blew them off for a little while, but then this song just got to me. I don’t know anything about them, but this song is slow and cool and feels like a … slow, cool song.
8. “Love as a Weapon” — Little Scream
Such a cool, funky song. Maybe the best singalong of the group. Ok, let me take that back. Depends on what you like to sing along to I guess. It’s just a cool jam. One of those songs you can’t turn off. I think this is one of those solo artists and she just named herself a band name to take the attention away from the fact that her name is Mildred Pattycake or something.
7. “On Hold” — The xx
I have no doubt if this song had come out earlier in the year, it would be number one. I am currently listening to it on rotation, just ask my kids. I will go see them if they tour with their upcoming album. I think it’s due in February. This again is one of those bands that is so not in my wheelhouse personally, but they’re just so good. And they write the most beautiful songs. I mean, just sheer beauty in their music. They had my favorite song of like 2012 with “Angels” which is another beautiful song. I love her voice. It’s like an angel mixed with another angel or something. Not real good with the metaphors. And they have perfected the little four beat break between verses. Anyway, they’re on the bucket list. This should have been my favorite song. I’m just not a prisoner of the moment kind of guy. It’s not fair to those who have gutted it out all year.
6. “Slash/Burn” — Thao and the Get Down Stay Down
What a cool song. I honestly don’t know why I like it. It does not at all sound like something I would listen to, but I honestly thought it was going to be my favorite for the year. This whole album is just funky, and the bass on this song takes a front seat. Listen to it. Love it. Tell me why I like it so much.
5. “Pretty Dumb, Pretty Lame” — Peter Bjorn and John
Ok, so no joke, they had my favorite album of 2016. Imagine ELO and Abba got together and made an album. Then Peter Bjorn and John listened to it and said, “Guys, we should do something to pay homage to this record.” That’s what this is. And this song is so doggone catchy, and probably has my favorite line of any song on the countdown”
“So you think you can hit the sky/if you feed the machine that the industry drives/is it worth all the souls you’ll destroy on the ride?”
No idea what that means, but it’s super cool.
4. “Crying in the Sunshine” — Miniature Tigers
I don’t do as many Spider-Man videos as I used to. Sorry. SPOILER ALERT: That’s me in that mask, guys. But this song prompted me, no … COMPELLED me to do one. There’s nothing deep or meaningful about this song, I don’t think. It’s just fun to dance to when you’re wearing a Spider-Man mask. Or so the wall-crawler tells me (wink).
3. “Lazer Gun Show” — Hey Geronimo
I am so ashamed of myself because I just knew this was going to be number one. I told my friend Conner that everyone was going to be singing “HEY! HO! WHERE DID THE SUN GO?” all year long. And that didn’t happen. But this is a great album from a great band that I am holding out hope will one day come to America. They’re Australian. I like Australian bands. It has to have something to do with Rick Springfield, Men at Work, and the fact that Olivia Newton-John was my first celebrity crush. Yeah, that’s probably it.
2. “Silly Me” — Yeasayer
Second best album I bought this year, and by far … by far the best show I saw. I thought they’d be good, but I had no idea they’d be that good. It was such a fun atmosphere. Everything was upbeat and I said I would be fine as long as they played three songs: Silly Me, Ambling Alp and O.N.E … then they played them all three back to back to back. So they listen to their fans as well. Seriously, if you want to go to see them, I will travel. They are worth it. Best $20 I may have ever spent on a concert, and I’m not joking. They’re so good.
1. “Don’t” — Larkin Poe
Ok, so I saw they were opening for Costello so I started listening to them and I got hooked. The only bad thing is the audience they were playing to is probably not their target audience. Let me put it this way. Rarely do I attend a show in which I actually bring the average age of the audience down. But that’s what they were dealing with. And they killed it. And they closed their set with “Bang Bang” and I thought I was going to die. They are that good. They’re going to be big. Imagine if Jack White did an album with Haim, and let’s also just assume that Haim was actually talented. You might get something like Larkin Poe. This song is a little more pop than the other songs on their new album. And I got to meet them and they were so nice and I completely made an idiot out of myself. “So you guys are from Atlanta? I love Atlanta. I eat at the Varsity a lot.” Because, you know, all there is to do in Atlanta is eat at The Varsity. Anyway, they were nice. And while any of these songs could have been number one, I looked Rebecca Lovell in the eye and told her “Don’t” is my favorite song of 2016. And you try lying to Rebecca Lovell. Seriously, they are so rocking.

So there you have it. Looking forward to hearing some of your favorite music from the year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, y’all.

Trolling, Trolling, Trolling

Let me start by saying this is stupid and you can't hate me more than I hate myself for doing this.

That being said, I don't have any more money today than I did yesterday. I am not younger or more handsome. I am no closer to being famous and driving a Porsche than I was before the NBA Championship was played. Neither of my teams lost (though we were rooting for Harrison/McAdoo and against Kyrie bc even though he only played 11 games in college he's still a Dookie). I am pretty much not affected at all by last night's outcome. I am not a LeBron fan, mainly because everyone compares him to Jordan which is absolutely laughable, but that's what we do. We live in the moment and everything that is happening now is the greatest ever. If LeBron had won his titles in the 90s and MJ was in his prime now, it would be the same way. Whatever is happening now is the greatest.
Having said that, let's just pump the brakes on "LeBron is the greatest ever" nonsense, because that's what it is. It's utter nonsense and borderline insulting. LeBron may be the greatest you've seen and that's totally fair. I actually may not think Jordan is the greatest if I had seen Wilt play. I don't know. And you can't know, because the eye test says more than stats ever can. Trust me, as Marino's place in the record book continues to fade into the distance, it gets more and more difficult to convince people who didn't see him play (and some that did) how good a QB he really is, mainly because he doesn't have a couple rings. The point I'm trying to make is that I no longer care, because I've learned that sports is completely subjective and stats can be manipulated. It is impossible for anyone who roots for a team or individual to remain objective when it comes to that athlete or team's place in history. They are the best to me, so I have to convince everyone they are dumb for not agreeing with me. We have to have something to argue about, because what is life if I can't be right? How about just being a fan? Apparently we can't do that because we all want to be associated with not only greatness, but the greatest ever in the history of anything. It somehow gives us value. How about we try valuing what we love and if someone else doesn't, who gives a rip? Why should I care what someone else thinks, unless I'm employed by them or owe them something?
You know what I enjoy? I enjoy having intelligent conversations with people who don't have the same opinions as I do. If you are passionate about it, and respect my right to be the same, we're going to get along fine. But let me say this: If you're a Patriots fan, and you can't decide if you'd take Brady or Manning to win a big game, walk away. Do not come at me with that, because if you're a Patriots fan, you don't spend one second on that decision. And I will say this, when it comes to arguing sports and such, I would say I'm the LeBron/Jordan of such. And when you come at the King, you'd better not miss. Thing is, I don't need to argue over junk. I'm not going to convince you. You're sure as heck not going to convince me, so why waste the oxygen? I could be using that time to post recipes, my views on politics and hate articles on Facebook. But I also enjoy trolling on the internet. So I'm kind of a hypocrite in that way, except I don't care which side of the fence you're on. I'm not even talking about anything I believe in. I just said I believe I'll see if I can't make you angry today. It's really more of a hobby for people who have no perspective. Just trying to help people put things in their place.
I know nothing will change, but my mind has. I don't care if Coach K has more wins and titles, Dean Smith will always be the greatest college basketball coach of all-time. I don't care if/when Belichick passes Shula, he'll never surpass him in my mind. And look, I'm not saying LeBron isn't an all-time great. But he'll never be Jordan, and for that matter, in my mind, he'll never be Magic. In fact, he just recently passed Dr. J on my list and I can't even talk about it. So have fun blowing everything out of proportion, internet. I'll just be over here shooing kids off my lawn. This is the end of my rant, and possibly several friendships.

My Favorite 25 of 2015

Wow, I haven't posted a blog article since this time last year. Sad, really. I'll try to do better. 2015 was a great year for music. There are a lot of great songs that I had to leave off this list. It's always hard figuring out which songs don't make the cut. Usually, it's like 3 or 4 songs that I have to cross off, getting from 28 to 25. This year, it was stomach-churning just trying to get it down to 40. And then the jump from 40 to 25 ... well, it just took a while. But you know what? I'm happy with the list. There is not one song I would second guess. And once you get into the top 15, the order could be switched up based on how I'm feeling that day. Today, this is how I'm feeling. So I’ll start now. And as always, feel free to share your list of favorites with me. I like lists and I like music. And also remember that if it’s new to you, it’s new music.

25. “On Your Mind” - White Reaper
Don’t know anything about this band or how long they’ve been around or whatever. I listened to their album and I liked it. This is the track that I couldn’t get out of my head. They kind of remind me a little bit of early Surfer Blood. In fact, I have looked back through my lists through the years, and every year seems to have a particular sound that I really liked over the course of the year. This year, this seems to be the sound. Whatever that means. Kind of a Surfer-Rock vibe. Is that a thing? Because it should be a thing.

24. “Stitches” - Shawn Mendes
Don’t judge me. This happens to me every year. The girls like some song that I make fun of for a week and then find myself singing it when they’re not around. Trust me, I tried hating this song. It’s actually pretty stupid, but it’s just so darn catchy and … you know what? No. I apologize for nothing.

23. “Oh My Love” - The Score
I have to thank my compadre Reni Filbrun for this gem. She actually said, “I think this sounds like something you’d like.” Now, I don’t know what that means, but she was right. And it didn’t take me ten listens. I was hooked at the first. And I discovered something about myself. I am a sucker for “Oh Oh” songs. Think about it. “Spaceman”, “Sweetness”, “Poker Face”? What do these songs have in common? They all have “oh oh” parts. And I love them all. Add this one to the list.

22. “Dorian” - Surfer Blood
Seriously, I love Surfer Blood so much and apparently none of my “friends” do, because no one will go to their show that I have an extra ticket to on January 3. Come on, folks. It’s a FREE TICKET! I’ll drive. Listen to their new album and then tell me you wouldn’t see these guys for free. Or maybe it’s me. Well, well, well … how the turntables …

21. “Empty Nesters” - Toro Y Moi
Is this one of those vague names for a literal one man band? I think it is. Like I bet this guy’s name is Reggie Walton, and the record producers made him change it to something no one will understand. Fun Fact: Toro Y Moi actually means “Boys 2 Men” in Russian.

20. “Nightlight” - Silversun Pickups
I love this band. They’re prolly in my top ten I bet. And I understand that everything they put out sounds the same. I get the argument. But you know, maybe it’s Maybelline, but for some bands, that works. Maybe it’s just with bands I like. But you know what? I love Green Day and it’s all just one long song. SSPU may be the same way, but I will still like it. I like their stuff. I wonder if they’re coming to Houston soon? Not like anyone would go with me though.

19. “Hello” - Adele
What? I’m only human, folks. She’s ridiculous. I swear the first time I heard this song, I just started calling people and apologizing. Adele is just one of those artists that can make anything sound good. Like if she told you to eat poison, you wouldn’t. But then she would write a song about eating poison and sing it and then next thing you know you’re in the ER getting your stomach pumped. That’s the thing. If anyone else does this song, I’m ripping it for the juvenile lyrics. But it’s Adele. So I’m getting my stomach pumped rn.

18. “Water” - Ra Ra Riot
Not gonna lie, I liked them much more before Alexandra Lawn left. But we all have to move on, and one day I will. In the meantime, I hate to admit it, but these guys may not yet have peaked. New album is coming out in February, and I have to admit there has been no drop off since 2008’s The Rhumb Line, and I wore that album out. Anyway, this is a great song. Maybe this album won’t sound quite so much like Walk The Moon. *fingers crossed*

17. “Contagious” - Night Riots
I liked this song better before I knew anything about the band, and I realized I am way too old and far too male to go to any of their shows. This is apparently what happens when cute boys make “rock” music. You know, like Duran Duran. Amirite, y’all?

16. “Sunshine On My Back” - The National
This will be much higher after I see them live. Seriously, couple years ago I had tickets to see these guys in Austin. But I pretty much would have had to drive back after the show and gotten home at 2AM and had to get up for work the next day. And after listening to a 2 hour set from these guys, who knows how depressed I would have been. I love these guys so much, and I love Matt Berninger’s voice as much as anyone’s, but don’t listen to their stuff unless you want to reflect on EVERYONE WHO HAS EVER HURT YOU IN THE HISTORY OF YOUR LIFE. That being said, I have been clamoring for these guys to do a Taylor Swift tribute album. Can you imagine how melancholy you’d be after listening to their version of “22”. You’d probably eat poison.

15. “River” - The Vanity
Group of cool guys from Austin. They were the opening opening band for CWK at HOB this year. You know, that “local” band who opens for the opening band? But I will tell you this, I love Cold War Kids and maybe if it had been anyone else, The Vanity would have been the best band on the stage that night. I hope these guys do well. They’re super nice too. And the drummer is a beast. That pretty much sums up my idea of a perfect band. I think they have an EP out and it’s on iTunes. Check them out if you haven’t.

14. “The Noisy Days Are Over” - Field Music
Every year a band who has been around forever but I have never listened to comes into my life. This year, it’s Field Music. Don’t know what I was waiting on or what rock I was living under, because I absolutely dig everything I have heard from them so far. New album, great song. It has a 70s kind of vibe to it. One of those that you just kinda slow jam to. I don’t know. I like it. And it’s new to me, so it’s new music.

13. “Buzzkill(er)” - Dead Weather
Ok, so I admit that of all the projects Jack White has done, this is my least favorite. I am still waiting on something new from The Raconteurs, and I can’t tell you honestly that I’m over the 2008 ACL Incident. I am, however, not bitter. So then this album comes out and this song drives my interest in it. And I am impressed, Jack. Very well done. Like I should expect any different from Jack White, who I love very much even though he still hasn’t played “Salute Your Solution.” Ok, I’m a little bitter.

12. “Talk To Me” - Kopecky
I’m sure you all know more about these guys than I do. I did find out that they went to Belmont University, which is kinda cool I guess. I mean, if you like Nashville. This album, Drug for the Modern Age, is actually quite great. So much so that I had a hard time deciding this was even my favorite track. And I’m still wondering if it is. “Quarterback” and the title track are both great options.

11. “Rosanna” - The Fratellis
Forget what everyone has told you. Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied is their best album. And I love all their stuff, but it’s not even close. It’s not like they changed their sound a ton, but it just feels like they took some chances on this one. And they nailed it. This is probably not the best song on the album, and maybe not even a good representation, but it’s the one I kept going back to. It’s just really smooth and easy to kinda slow groove to. Hope they come to Houston so I can go see them by myself.

10. “Savannah” - Moon Taxi
Again, this is one of those bands that I never really listened to until this new album. Turns out, they’re pretty good. And the whole album is grand. But this song is by far the best track. Or at least my favorite by a long shot. Sounds like one of those island jams. You know, the kind of song Jimmy Buffett would have done before he bought into the Dolphins and lost his will to live.

9. “Business of Emotion” - Big Data
All I know is this isn’t close to the kind of music I like. At least that’s what I keep trying to tell myself. This appears to be one of those odd duos where it’s an attractive, talented woman and a guy with a keyboard who still has to get permission from his parents to attend recording sessions (see: Sleigh Bells). I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong here. Just seems that way to me. Anyway, good song though.

8. “The World is Crowded” - Unknown Mortal Orchestra
UMO is underrated as a band and Ruban Nielson is a Diet Dr Pepper addict. So … everyone is winning so far. I really like the sound of the new album. It’s a little smoother than the last one, and apparently it’s quite personal, but it’s a good listen. And I just realized they're coming to Houston in February. I also just realized I talk a lot about going to/wanting to go to live shows. Makes me think I must be really hard to be around. My basic answer to "how are you?" must sound something like, "I'm good, but the Dolphins aren't. But it's ok, cause I spell Dook with two Os and Spider-Man and I are going to see Cold War Kids next month and I'm super pumped because Elliot Moss is opening for them and I love M&Ms. Go Heels!" I'm truly sorry, y'all. I guess it is me.

7. “Work It Out” - Knox Hamilton
I think these guys are from Russellville, AR. I don’t know why that’s important, except that they’d be the second band from Russellville that I have really liked. I’m almost 100% that Deas Vail is from there, yes? Can anyone confirm? Anyway, there may be more. I will say that I only know of one EP these guys have out rn. But I’m pretty sure they have staying power. This song is so stinking catchy. I guarantee you’ll be singing it all day. Also, they’re coming to Houston February 20. It’s ok. I understand.

6. “Way Too Much” - Wavves
This reminds me of the movie Avengers. I’m never going to look at that movie as my favorite all-time, but I can’t remember having more fun during a film. This is the musical equivalent of that in 2015. And it’s so my kind of jam. Crank it up to Ricky Williams, rock out for 2 and a half minutes and repeat. BTW, I don’t think I have mentioned that I refer to each setting on my volume control in terms of which Dolphin wore it, have I? And if I can’t think of anyone significant who wore it, we have to move to the next number until we get one? Have I also mentioned that I am not well? I promise you since I started my podcast, Stacy’s “praying for you” mail has quadrupled. Also, if the Fins don’t start showing signs of making the playoffs in the next couple years, we’re going to be cranking this song up to Antawn Jamison.

5. “Dreams Come True” - Brandon Flowers
You know, I remember standing there at Verizon, unable to take my eyes off this guy as fire dropped from the ceiling and he belted out “When You Were Young.” First time I ever saw The Killers, and I thought then that this guy is doing what he was created to do. Some people were just born to be rock stars. Brandon Flowers is everything you want in a front man. Great voice, good looking guy, tons of charisma. He owns the stage, doesn’t take himself seriously. He makes you feel like you’re sitting in his living room, perhaps sipping apple cider, listening to some songs he wrote for his kids. I mean, except his living room is a concert hall and the decibel level is cranked up to Brad Daugherty.

4. “Smooth Sailing” - Leon Bridges
And there he stood. Ten minutes after opening for Lord Huron, Leon Bridges is standing at his merch table at HOB. I’m looking right at him. He’s taking pictures with fans. Prolly signing stuff. I could go down there. But no! I don’t want to fight through the crowd and risk missing Lord Huron’s opener. So I missed out on my chance to meet probably the coolest man alive. Seriously, this guy is so smooth he’s like butter. Except not the kind of butter that when you try to spread it, it makes holes in your bread. It’s just melty enough to spread really easily but not so melty that it hits one spot on the bread and just stays there. It’s very spreadable and smooth. Like spreadable butter. You know what? If you need the address to send those “praying for you” cards to Stacy, just let me know.

3. “Big Winter Jacket” - Cayucas
So these guys were in Houston back in August and believe it or not, I actually had friends who went with me. But I would have gone by myself. One of the last shows at Fitzgerald’s, which is sad. I love that place. Great place to see a show. My favorite place in Houston to see a show. Funny thing is, I thought Cayucas was one of those “one guy with a band name” deals. Turns out, it’s twin brothers. Who knew? Well, the good news is they are both swell guys. They didn’t play this song in their show. It’s got quite a long intro and it’s a longer song than they usually play. But as my now good friend and frontman Zach told me, “We gotta figure out a way to get that song in the show.” So I think it’s obvious that there is a level of trust he’s given me, which is, well … just so Zach. I’m sure we will go on and on about it if he would ever unblock me on Twitter.

2. “Fool For Love” - Lord Huron
The battle for number one has been keeping me up at night, folks. In many ways, this was my favorite song of the year. It was definitely (maybe) the most surprising show I saw this past year. I just didn’t expect it to be so good. I mean, I knew it would be good, but it was seriously so good, guys. I don’t know how to describe LH’s music, but this whole album is ridiculously good. In fact, it’s better than the last one, and I wore that one out. And this song is so easy to love. The video is kinda funny. But also, when Ben Schneider sings “before I commence my ride, I’m asking Lily to be my bride” well, that kinda won me over. This song seriously is co-favorite for 2015, but I don’t believe in ties, so I had to go with one. And being number two is not bad when you’re talking about a whole year’s worth of music.

1. “Seeing Ghosts” - Emperors
I am sad that these guys hung it up this year. I love Emperors’ music so much. I have all their stuff, mainly because Greg mailed me all their CDs, a T-shirt, hand-written lyrics and a nice letter thanking me for my loyalty. So if nothing else, the fact that they are calling it quits and so awesome to mail that stuff from Australia, that puts them at number one. Seriously, though, if you asked me what kind of music is my favorite, I would just put these guys on for you. It’s a guitar, bass and drums. Kicking vocals, great lyrics, catchy hooks, rocking sound. Their last album Chupacabra is on iTunes. You can start there if you like, but you’ll soon be listening to all their stuff. My biggest regret is that I failed to get them to the States, specifically to ACL Music Festival. I tried, guys. I really did. And I could never convince Stacy that she should let me fly to Australia to see a concert. I only hope they will either reunite or start something new under a different name or whatever. I seriously went through about a two-week depression when I heard they were breaking up. But I choose to smile because they happened and not cry because they’re over. You know, knowing these guys, they’ll probably read this. You know why? Because they appreciate their fans. And I appreciate them. I have had many a car ride with this jam cranked up to Rashad McCants and just screaming my lungs out. Please guys, if any of you read this, let me know when/if you make a comeback. I bet flights to Australia aren’t that pricey.

So that’s it. These are my 25 favorite songs of 2015. No pressure, 2016. Happy New Year, errbody!
