Trolling, Trolling, Trolling

Let me start by saying this is stupid and you can't hate me more than I hate myself for doing this.

That being said, I don't have any more money today than I did yesterday. I am not younger or more handsome. I am no closer to being famous and driving a Porsche than I was before the NBA Championship was played. Neither of my teams lost (though we were rooting for Harrison/McAdoo and against Kyrie bc even though he only played 11 games in college he's still a Dookie). I am pretty much not affected at all by last night's outcome. I am not a LeBron fan, mainly because everyone compares him to Jordan which is absolutely laughable, but that's what we do. We live in the moment and everything that is happening now is the greatest ever. If LeBron had won his titles in the 90s and MJ was in his prime now, it would be the same way. Whatever is happening now is the greatest.

Having said that, let's just pump the brakes on "LeBron is the greatest ever" nonsense, because that's what it is. It's utter nonsense and borderline insulting. LeBron may be the greatest you've seen and that's totally fair. I actually may not think Jordan is the greatest if I had seen Wilt play. I don't know. And you can't know, because the eye test says more than stats ever can. Trust me, as Marino's place in the record book continues to fade into the distance, it gets more and more difficult to convince people who didn't see him play (and some that did) how good a QB he really is, mainly because he doesn't have a couple rings. The point I'm trying to make is that I no longer care, because I've learned that sports is completely subjective and stats can be manipulated. It is impossible for anyone who roots for a team or individual to remain objective when it comes to that athlete or team's place in history. They are the best to me, so I have to convince everyone they are dumb for not agreeing with me. We have to have something to argue about, because what is life if I can't be right? How about just being a fan? Apparently we can't do that because we all want to be associated with not only greatness, but the greatest ever in the history of anything. It somehow gives us value. How about we try valuing what we love and if someone else doesn't, who gives a rip? Why should I care what someone else thinks, unless I'm employed by them or owe them something?

You know what I enjoy? I enjoy having intelligent conversations with people who don't have the same opinions as I do. If you are passionate about it, and respect my right to be the same, we're going to get along fine. But let me say this: If you're a Patriots fan, and you can't decide if you'd take Brady or Manning to win a big game, walk away. Do not come at me with that, because if you're a Patriots fan, you don't spend one second on that decision. And I will say this, when it comes to arguing sports and such, I would say I'm the LeBron/Jordan of such. And when you come at the King, you'd better not miss. Thing is, I don't need to argue over junk. I'm not going to convince you. You're sure as heck not going to convince me, so why waste the oxygen? I could be using that time to post recipes, my views on politics and hate articles on Facebook. But I also enjoy trolling on the internet. So I'm kind of a hypocrite in that way, except I don't care which side of the fence you're on. I'm not even talking about anything I believe in. I just said I believe I'll see if I can't make you angry today. It's really more of a hobby for people who have no perspective. Just trying to help people put things in their place.

I know nothing will change, but my mind has. I don't care if Coach K has more wins and titles, Dean Smith will always be the greatest college basketball coach of all-time. I don't care if/when Belichick passes Shula, he'll never surpass him in my mind. And look, I'm not saying LeBron isn't an all-time great. But he'll never be Jordan, and for that matter, in my mind, he'll never be Magic. In fact, he just recently passed Dr. J on my list and I can't even talk about it. So have fun blowing everything out of proportion, internet. I'll just be over here shooing kids off my lawn. This is the end of my rant, and possibly several friendships.

My Favorite 25 of 2015

Wow, I haven't posted a blog article since this time last year. Sad, really. I'll try to do better. 2015 was a great year for music. There are a lot of great songs that I had to leave off this list. It's always hard figuring out which songs don't make the cut. Usually, it's like 3 or 4 songs that I have to cross off, getting from 28 to 25. This year, it was stomach-churning just trying to get it down to 40. And then the jump from 40 to 25 ... well, it just took a while. But you know what? I'm happy with the list. There is not one song I would second guess. And once you get into the top 15, the order could be switched up based on how I'm feeling that day. Today, this is how I'm feeling. So I’ll start now. And as always, feel free to share your list of favorites with me. I like lists and I like music. And also remember that if it’s new to you, it’s new music. 

25. “On Your Mind” - White Reaper

Don’t know anything about this band or how long they’ve been around or whatever. I listened to their album and I liked it. This is the track that I couldn’t get out of my head. They kind of remind me a little bit of early Surfer Blood. In fact, I have looked back through my lists through the years, and every year seems to have a particular sound that I really liked over the course of the year. This year, this seems to be the sound. Whatever that means. Kind of a Surfer-Rock vibe. Is that a thing? Because it should be a thing.

24. “Stitches” - Shawn Mendes  

Don’t judge me. This happens to me every year. The girls like some song that I make fun of for a week and then find myself singing it when they’re not around. Trust me, I tried hating this song. It’s actually pretty stupid, but it’s just so darn catchy and … you know what? No. I apologize for nothing.

23. “Oh My Love” - The Score

I have to thank my compadre Reni Filbrun for this gem. She actually said, “I think this sounds like something you’d like.” Now, I don’t know what that means, but she was right. And it didn’t take me ten listens. I was hooked at the first. And I discovered something about myself. I am a sucker for “Oh Oh” songs. Think about it. “Spaceman”, “Sweetness”, “Poker Face”? What do these songs have in common? They all have “oh oh” parts. And I love them all. Add this one to the list.

22. “Dorian” - Surfer Blood

Seriously, I love Surfer Blood so much and apparently none of my “friends” do, because no one will go to their show that I have an extra ticket to on January 3. Come on, folks. It’s a FREE TICKET! I’ll drive. Listen to their new album and then tell me you wouldn’t see these guys for free. Or maybe it’s me. Well, well, well … how the turntables …

21. “Empty Nesters” - Toro Y Moi

Is this one of those vague names for a literal one man band? I think it is. Like I bet this guy’s name is Reggie Walton, and the record producers made him change it to something no one will understand. Fun Fact: Toro Y Moi actually means “Boys 2 Men” in Russian.

20. “Nightlight” - Silversun Pickups

I love this band. They’re prolly in my top ten I bet. And I understand that everything they put out sounds the same. I get the argument. But you know, maybe it’s Maybelline, but for some bands, that works. Maybe it’s just with bands I like. But you know what? I love Green Day and it’s all just one long song. SSPU may be the same way, but I will still like it. I like their stuff. I wonder if they’re coming to Houston soon? Not like anyone would go with me though. 

19. “Hello” - Adele

What? I’m only human, folks. She’s ridiculous. I swear the first time I heard this song, I just started calling people and apologizing. Adele is just one of those artists that can make anything sound good. Like if she told you to eat poison, you wouldn’t. But then she would write a song about eating poison and sing it and then next thing you know you’re in the ER getting your stomach pumped. That’s the thing. If anyone else does this song, I’m ripping it for the juvenile lyrics. But it’s Adele. So I’m getting my stomach pumped rn.

18. “Water” - Ra Ra Riot

Not gonna lie, I liked them much more before Alexandra Lawn left. But we all have to move on, and one day I will. In the meantime, I hate to admit it, but these guys may not yet have peaked. New album is coming out in February, and I have to admit there has been no drop off since 2008’s The Rhumb Line, and I wore that album out. Anyway, this is a great song. Maybe this album won’t sound quite so much like Walk The Moon. *fingers crossed*

17. “Contagious” - Night Riots

I liked this song better before I knew anything about the band, and I realized I am way too old and far too male to go to any of their shows. This is apparently what happens when cute boys make “rock” music. You know, like Duran Duran. Amirite, y’all?

16. “Sunshine On My Back” - The National

This will be much higher after I see them live. Seriously, couple years ago I had tickets to see these guys in Austin. But I pretty much would have had to drive back after the show and gotten home at 2AM and had to get up for work the next day. And after listening to a 2 hour set from these guys, who knows how depressed I would have been. I love these guys so much, and I love Matt Berninger’s voice as much as anyone’s, but don’t listen to their stuff unless you want to reflect on EVERYONE WHO HAS EVER HURT YOU IN THE HISTORY OF YOUR LIFE. That being said, I have been clamoring for these guys to do a Taylor Swift tribute album. Can you imagine how melancholy you’d be after listening to their version of “22”. You’d probably eat poison.

15. “River” - The Vanity 

Group of cool guys from Austin. They were the opening opening band for CWK at HOB this year. You know, that “local” band who opens for the opening band? But I will tell you this, I love Cold War Kids and maybe if it had been anyone else, The Vanity would have been the best band on the stage that night. I hope these guys do well. They’re super nice too. And the drummer is a beast. That pretty much sums up my idea of a perfect band. I think they have an EP out and it’s on iTunes. Check them out if you haven’t. 

14. “The Noisy Days Are Over” - Field Music

Every year a band who has been around forever but I have never listened to comes into my life. This year, it’s Field Music. Don’t know what I was waiting on or what rock I was living under, because I absolutely dig everything I have heard from them so far. New album, great song. It has a 70s kind of vibe to it. One of those that you just kinda slow jam to. I don’t know. I like it. And it’s new to me, so it’s new music.

13. “Buzzkill(er)” - Dead Weather

Ok, so I admit that of all the projects Jack White has done, this is my least favorite. I am still waiting on something new from The Raconteurs, and I can’t tell you honestly that I’m over the 2008 ACL Incident™. I am, however, not bitter. So then this album comes out and this song drives my interest in it. And I am impressed, Jack. Very well done. Like I should expect any different from Jack White, who I love very much even though he still hasn’t played “Salute Your Solution.” Ok, I’m a little bitter. 

12. “Talk To Me” - Kopecky

I’m sure you all know more about these guys than I do. I did find out that they went to Belmont University, which is kinda cool I guess. I mean, if you like Nashville. This album, Drug for the Modern Age, is actually quite great. So much so that I had a hard time deciding this was even my favorite track. And I’m still wondering if it is. “Quarterback” and the title track are both great options. 

11. “Rosanna” - The Fratellis

Forget what everyone has told you. Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied is their best album. And I love all their stuff, but it’s not even close. It’s not like they changed their sound a ton, but it just feels like they took some chances on this one. And they nailed it. This is probably not the best song on the album, and maybe not even a good representation, but it’s the one I kept going back to. It’s just really smooth and easy to kinda slow groove to. Hope they come to Houston so I can go see them by myself. 

10. “Savannah” - Moon Taxi

Again, this is one of those bands that I never really listened to until this new album. Turns out, they’re pretty good. And the whole album is grand. But this song is by far the best track. Or at least my favorite by a long shot. Sounds like one of those island jams. You know, the kind of song Jimmy Buffett would have done before he bought into the Dolphins and lost his will to live.

9. “Business of Emotion” - Big Data

All I know is this isn’t close to the kind of music I like. At least that’s what I keep trying to tell myself. This appears to be one of those odd duos where it’s an attractive, talented woman and a guy with a keyboard who still has to get permission from his parents to attend recording sessions (see: Sleigh Bells). I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong here. Just seems that way to me. Anyway, good song though.

8. “The World is Crowded” - Unknown Mortal Orchestra

UMO is underrated as a band and Ruban Nielson is a Diet Dr Pepper addict. So … everyone is winning so far. I really like the sound of the new album. It’s a little smoother than the last one, and apparently it’s quite personal, but it’s a good listen. And I just realized they're coming to Houston in February. I also just realized I talk a lot about going to/wanting to go to live shows. Makes me think I must be really hard to be around. My basic answer to "how are you?" must sound something like, "I'm good, but the Dolphins aren't. But it's ok, cause I spell Dook with two Os and Spider-Man and I are going to see Cold War Kids next month and I'm super pumped because Elliot Moss is opening for them and I love M&Ms. Go Heels!" I'm truly sorry, y'all. I guess it is me.

7. “Work It Out” - Knox Hamilton

I think these guys are from Russellville, AR. I don’t know why that’s important, except that they’d be the second band from Russellville that I have really liked. I’m almost 100% that Deas Vail is from there, yes? Can anyone confirm? Anyway, there may be more. I will say that I only know of one EP these guys have out rn. But I’m pretty sure they have staying power. This song is so stinking catchy. I guarantee you’ll be singing it all day. Also, they’re coming to Houston February 20. It’s ok. I understand. 

6. “Way Too Much” - Wavves

This reminds me of the movie Avengers. I’m never going to look at that movie as my favorite all-time, but I can’t remember having more fun during a film. This is the musical equivalent of that in 2015. And it’s so my kind of jam. Crank it up to Ricky Williams, rock out for 2 and a half minutes and repeat. BTW, I don’t think I have mentioned that I refer to each setting on my volume control in terms of which Dolphin wore it, have I? And if I can’t think of anyone significant who wore it, we have to move to the next number until we get one? Have I also mentioned that I am not well? I promise you since I started my podcast, Stacy’s “praying for you” mail has quadrupled. Also, if the Fins don’t start showing signs of making the playoffs in the next couple years, we’re going to be cranking this song up to Antawn Jamison. 

5. “Dreams Come True” - Brandon Flowers

You know, I remember standing there at Verizon, unable to take my eyes off this guy as fire dropped from the ceiling and he belted out “When You Were Young.” First time I ever saw The Killers, and I thought then that this guy is doing what he was created to do. Some people were just born to be rock stars. Brandon Flowers is everything you want in a front man. Great voice, good looking guy, tons of charisma. He owns the stage, doesn’t take himself seriously. He makes you feel like you’re sitting in his living room, perhaps sipping apple cider, listening to some songs he wrote for his kids. I mean, except his living room is a concert hall and the decibel level is cranked up to Brad Daugherty. 

4. “Smooth Sailing” - Leon Bridges

And there he stood. Ten minutes after opening for Lord Huron, Leon Bridges is standing at his merch table at HOB. I’m looking right at him. He’s taking pictures with fans. Prolly signing stuff. I could go down there. But no! I don’t want to fight through the crowd and risk missing Lord Huron’s opener. So I missed out on my chance to meet probably the coolest man alive. Seriously, this guy is so smooth he’s like butter. Except not the kind of butter that when you try to spread it, it makes holes in your bread. It’s just melty enough to spread really easily but not so melty that it hits one spot on the bread and just stays there. It’s very spreadable and smooth. Like spreadable butter. You know what? If you need the address to send those “praying for you” cards to Stacy, just let me know. 

3. “Big Winter Jacket” - Cayucas

So these guys were in Houston back in August and believe it or not, I actually had friends who went with me. But I would have gone by myself. One of the last shows at Fitzgerald’s, which is sad. I love that place. Great place to see a show. My favorite place in Houston to see a show. Funny thing is, I thought Cayucas was one of those “one guy with a band name” deals. Turns out, it’s twin brothers. Who knew? Well, the good news is they are both swell guys. They didn’t play this song in their show. It’s got quite a long intro and it’s a longer song than they usually play. But as my now good friend and frontman Zach told me, “We gotta figure out a way to get that song in the show.” So I think it’s obvious that there is a level of trust he’s given me, which is, well … just so Zach. I’m sure we will go on and on about it if he would ever unblock me on Twitter.

2. “Fool For Love” - Lord Huron

The battle for number one has been keeping me up at night, folks. In many ways, this was my favorite song of the year. It was definitely (maybe) the most surprising show I saw this past year. I just didn’t expect it to be so good. I mean, I knew it would be good, but it was seriously so good, guys. I don’t know how to describe LH’s music, but this whole album is ridiculously good. In fact, it’s better than the last one, and I wore that one out. And this song is so easy to love. The video is kinda funny. But also, when Ben Schneider sings “before I commence my ride, I’m asking Lily to be my bride” well, that kinda won me over. This song seriously is co-favorite for 2015, but I don’t believe in ties, so I had to go with one. And being number two is not bad when you’re talking about a whole year’s worth of music. 

1. “Seeing Ghosts” - Emperors

I am sad that these guys hung it up this year. I love Emperors’ music so much. I have all their stuff, mainly because Greg mailed me all their CDs, a T-shirt, hand-written lyrics and a nice letter thanking me for my loyalty. So if nothing else, the fact that they are calling it quits and so awesome to mail that stuff from Australia, that puts them at number one. Seriously, though, if you asked me what kind of music is my favorite, I would just put these guys on for you. It’s a guitar, bass and drums. Kicking vocals, great lyrics, catchy hooks, rocking sound. Their last album Chupacabra is on iTunes. You can start there if you like, but you’ll soon be listening to all their stuff. My biggest regret is that I failed to get them to the States, specifically to ACL Music Festival. I tried, guys. I really did. And I could never convince Stacy that she should let me fly to Australia to see a concert. I only hope they will either reunite or start something new under a different name or whatever. I seriously went through about a two-week depression when I heard they were breaking up. But I choose to smile because they happened and not cry because they’re over. You know, knowing these guys, they’ll probably read this. You know why? Because they appreciate their fans. And I appreciate them. I have had many a car ride with this jam cranked up to Rashad McCants and just screaming my lungs out. Please guys, if any of you read this, let me know when/if you make a comeback. I bet flights to Australia aren’t that pricey.

My Favorite 25 of 2014

I realize I only post about once a year. This is the only time I get excited about blogging. The other timez, I'm not. But I will say, that in the five years I've been doing this, 2014 was the toughest to narrow it down to 25 fave songs. Let's put it this way ... Jack White, Foo Fighters and Spoon all had new albums this year, and none of their tracks made the list. I tried, but I can't find one song I would replace on my 25. That's a strong list, and it's been done for about a month. I was just juxtaposing the songs, tweaking my love, if you will. What we have is, without a doubt, my favorite songs of the year  in perfect order. And there was history made this year, but we'll talk about that in a little bit. For now, on with the countdown!

25. "Luv, Hold Me Down" - Drowners
I gotta admit, I thought this was the Kooks the first time I heard it. That's probably why it made the list. But it is catchy, and it kind of reminds me of the Pretenders as well. Yet, because there's no Chrissie Hynde, it only comes in at 25.

24. "How Can You Really" - Foxygen
For the record, I don't want to like Foxygen. I really don't listen to them, except when this song came on the radio, and I accidentally heard it, I liked it. And it got stuck in my head and I couldn't stop singing it, and finally had to admit I liked it. And I kinda like Foxygen, although I wouldn't pay to go see them, because the lead singer could get disgusted and walk off stage in the middle of a set. But that would probably never happen and be plastered on YouTube.

23. "Seasons (Waiting On You)" - Future Islands
Also for the record, there are more bands on the countdown this year that I don't listen to on a regular basis. That will probably change after buying some of these albums. This is one of those cases. I bought their album "Singles" and I loved it almost immediately. And I asked myself why I had never listened to them before, and I can't think of any reason. They're good, though they do sound a little bit like Temper Trap and Snow Patrol had a baby, but I won't hold that against them. Smooth song.

22. "Cardiac Arrest" - Bad Suns
I don't know about Bad Suns. They sound like a "new wave" Brit band. This album seriously could have come out in the 80s and they could have changed their name to Soft Cell and it would have fit right in. Good song, though. Prolly cause it sounds 80s.

21. "Class Historian" - BRONCHO
I know nothing about this band or whatever they/he are/is. Heard this song on the radio one day and the girls hated it, so I left it on. Then I was singing it the rest of the day. It's so incredibly catchy. I have nothing to compare it to, but it's fun.

20. "I'm Not Part of Me" - Cloud Nothings
I don't like Cloud Nothings as much as some folks do, but I have never heard anything by them I don't love. Good album and a great song off it. They came to Houston this year and I didn't see them. This is a recurring theme throughout 2014. It won't be in 2015.

19. "Happy Idiot" - TV on the Radio
I have never found this band appealing. I do like this song, and maybe I'm missing something. Maybe I'll try again, but there is just so much music out there, you don't have time to buy into everyone. I'm not a huge fan, but it is a great song I couldn't stop singing.

18. "Eurydice" - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Had an album out this year. I bought it and listened to it for three straight weeks. Great album. Great song. Great album full of great songs.

17. "Voodoo Doll" - 5 Seconds of Summer
Don't judge me.

16. "Gotta Get Away" - Black Keys
Am I the only person who liked "Turn Blue"? I'm beginning to think so. This is my favorite song off what I thought was their best album yet. Sure it's different, but ... ok, it's not "El Camino", but at least you're not hearing all the songs on every commercial on TV ... yet.

15. "Greens and Blues" - Pixies
I love the Pixies. Always have. Always will. Frank Black is incredibly eclectic, and "Indie Cindy" proves that. There wasn't a better album this year. And this song shows they can still bring it down when they want to. Seriously, the Pixies have inspired every good band that has come out since 1995. Wish I could have seen them when they came to Houston. Oh wait ... it's still 2014.

14. "You're Not Good Enough" - Blood Orange
This is one of those songs that I think came out too late last year to get on the list for 2013. So I cheated and put it on this year's. But I couldn't leave it off. I love it so much, even though it's mean.

13. "Got To My Head" - Waters
Listen to the song. Try not to sing it the rest of the day. Fail. Repeat.

12. "Dove Season" - Into the Valley Below
I think this is one of those guy/girl singer/songwriter teams I hate. But I listened to this song before I knew that. And then I bought the album after I knew that. So sue me.

11. "Top Notch" - Manchester Orchestra
I have loved Manchester Orchestra since I saw them at ACL a few years ago, and I realized Andy Hull looks just like Zach Galifianakis. Seriously love his voice and their raw energy they bring to every track on the album "Cope."

10. "Shooting From the Bell Tower" - Emperors
One of these days, they are coming to the States and I am going to see them. They rock so hard, even though they're Australian. A couple years ago, I had three Aussie bands make the 25. They're the only ones with sustainable power, because they are so awesome and they replied to me on Twitter like 5 times.

9. "Rollercoaster" - Bleachers
Liked this song a lot more before I realized this was one of the guys from Fun. It's way catchy, and I thank my friend Sam Greer for hooking me up. This is seriously a catchy song.

8. "Flashed Junk Mind" - Milky Chance
This should be higher. Can't. Stop. Singing. Although ... Don't. Know. What. They're. Saying.

7. "From Eden" - Hozier
Yes, I've heard "Take Me To Church" ... a year ago. Sorry, but he didn't just show up when that LeBron commercial hit. I know I'm trying to be a hipster, but I had to get that out there. This song is better anyway.

6. "Tall Man Skinny Lady" - Ty Segall
"Manipulator" is the album. Buy it. Listen to it. So good. It's garage rock at it's best. I promise you they were jamming one night after practice and he just made up lyrics as they went along. They recorded it, and here it is, the number 6 single of the year. Awesome for jamming in the car.

5. "All the Rage Back Home" - Interpol
Another band I didn't fully appreciate. I didn't know they had been around so long. Sure, I had "Antics", but only because I love the song "Evil." And, judging by how people went nuts at the show, everyone did. But I absolutely love Paul Banks voice. And this is also a catchy song. And "El Pintor" was one of the 5 best albums to come out this year.

4. "Out of Mind" - Magic Man
I really thought this was going to be number one. Then it dropped to 2. Then 3. And that's what you get for coming out so early in the year. I jammed to this song all the way back from Uplift this summer and kept it on every playlist. Maybe that's why it dropped. Or maybe it's just an awesome song that should be flattered they're in the top 4.

3. "Broken Bones and Pocket Change" - St. Paul and the Broken Bones
Best show I saw all year. I loved them already and then they brought the house down with a live show that brought so much energy, I didn't sleep for a week. And they are nice to their fans. I got to hang out afterward and meet them and get pictures and all that good stuff. Nicest guys, and they're coming to Fitzgerald's in February. See you there.

2. "Shake It Off" - Taylor Swift
Again, don't judge me. I don't like "pop" music, but I'm going to admit something. I love Taylor Swift. There, I said it and I don't see why people don't like her. She's cute as a bug. Her music is catchy. She stopped singing about jerks dumping her. This song makes me feel good about life. I don't care what anyone says. See? I'm shaking it off. Thank you, Taylor.

1. "Go Quietly" - Cold War Kids
And here is history. Last year, CWK released an album around February. "Miracle Mile" was the number one song last year. And this year, in October, they released "Hold My Home." So this is the first time in the history of the countdown that a band has had the number one song two years in a row. Of course, I have my own rulez about putting more than one song from a single artist on here, or the top seven would have all been CWK. Seriously. They're the best thing going right now. I love them so much. I once told the girls Nathan Willett could sing the phone book and I'd buy it. Of course Lily asked me what a phone book was, but I was proud, because she already knew that Nathan Willett is the smooth voice behind CWK. They can seriously do no wrong right now, and they are coming to HOB in March. See you there. But seriously. Get this album. Listen to it over and over and over. Then get their entire back catalog and listen to it over and over. This is one of the few bands with 5 or more albums that have gotten better with each record. Check them out on YouTube. Just give them a listen. And if you don't like it, I'll give you the money you paid to read this list back.

So there it is. And as always, my advice to you is to make lists. It's fun. Make your own list and use your own rulez. And then let other people see it, because I love that people share music with me constantly. I love that I have a group of friends who will text or message me every once in a while and say, "Hey, you should check out (so and so) if you haven't already." You never know, but you might have a new favorite band from something like this.

So ... Merry Christmas and I guess I will post again this time next year.

4A. "Shut Up and Dance" - Walk the Moon
I think WTM has always been a chick band, but I just didn't notice because there weren't a lot of teen girls at their first (or second) show in Houston. This album proves they are ... and I still don't care. This song is catchy and I will dance to it no matter how many teen girls I have to punch to get to the front of the stage.

My Favorite 25 of 2013

Well, the year is drawing to a close, and it's time once again for my annual "favorite songs of the year" list.  This was a good year for some of my favorite bands.  New albums from Jimmy Eat World, Vampire Weekend, Cold War Kids, The Fratellis and The National were highlights.  And bands I had never heard before like Phosphorescent, Catfish and The Bottlemen and Cayucas turned out to be pleasant surprises.  I don't even know how long I've been doing this list.  I think this is the fifth year, but I'm not sure.  I really like lists.  This year was the most difficult, I think.  A good mix of new friends and old faithfuls made 2013 my favorite year of doing this so far.  I really believe that any of the top 7 could have been number one, depending on what day it is and what mood I'm in.  But there has to be a number one, and I had to roll with my choice.  I don't regret it at all.  So let's get into the countdown, shall we?

25.  "Waves" - Sleeper Agent

First of all, let me say that this was a late addition to the list.  I'm sure if it had come out a couple months earlier, it would have been in the top ten.  Why?  Because I do happen to love Sleeper Agent. "Celebrasion" is one of my favorite albums of 2011, and I'm sure the new one is going to top it.  Their music is a lot of fun and they have a ton of energy.  I feel like I wear that phrasing out.  Sorry in advance.  Worth a listen.  Plus, they're one of those bands that have both a female and male vocalist, so they've got that going for them. 

24.  "Broken Heart" - Dr. Dog

I don’t know a durn thing about Dr. Dog, except I really like their sound.  A friend of mine (we’ll call him “Nathan Kelly”) got me listening to them sometime back.  I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan, but I definitely find them easy to listen to and really, really bluesy and smooth.  And this song is as catchy as any of theirs.  Well done by the good doctor.

23.  "Sonsick" - San Fermin

Another band I know nothing about.  I feel like I should do my research more into bands, but the problem with that is I really don’t care.  There is so much music out there that no one can listen to everything.  I love to get new music suggestions, but I do catch myself narrowing my field sometimes before giving newbies a real chance to break through.  Glad I listened to this song a few times, because once I realized it wasn’t Lana Del Rey, I really liked it.  I keed.  I just like picking at Lana Del Rey fans.  Also, I don’t know anything about Lana Del Rey.

22.  "Demon Dance" - Surfer Blood

I feel like Surfer Blood is one of those bands I really take for granted.  I don’t listen to them nearly as often as I should, but every time I do, I end up listening to them for hours and hours without stopping.  They put out a new album this year and I bought it and listened to it once.  I’ve listened to it more since then, but can’t for the life of me figure out why I don’t listen to them more often.  Like I said earlier, there is so much music out there you just can’t listen to it all.  Even the stuff you like.

21.  "Ohm" - Yo La Tengo

I had no idea Yo La Tengo has been around for twenty plus years.  I had never listened to anything they did (really) until this past year.  I just love this song.  It opens with the line “sometimes the bad guys come out on top . . . sometimes the good guys lose.”  You can’t beat that, at least in my book.  And I love the general rhythm of the song itself.  Another band I should listen to more often.

20.  "The Wire" - Haim

You can imagine my disappointment when I realized this wasn’t a Corey Haim tribute band.  It’s a group of girls that sound like they listened to a lot of the Bangles in the 80s.  I like their sound, I guess, but this is really the only song of theirs I’ve listened closely to.  I’ve heard they’re really good live and they have gained a lot of notoriety this year, so I should probably check out the album.  I’ll get right on that.  And yes, I'm aware they pronounce it "HIGHm."  Again, I just don't care.

19.  "Best of Friends" - Palma Violets

Another band I know nothing about, but am working into the rotation.  Ima be honest, I accidentally came across this song and hated it at first.  But I had already downloaded it and put it on a playlist, so I kept hearing it when I didn’t want to.  The next thing I know, I’m singing it as I’m driving or whatever.  And then, I just caved and liked it.  iTunes thinks I’m really going to like this group based on what I’ve purchased so far.  Good enough for me.  

18.  "Bagboy" - The Pixies

Because it’s the Pixies and Frank Black could do just about anything and I’d buy it.  They’re coming to Houston in February, and this time I am not going to miss them.  Of course, they kicked Kelly Deal out a long time ago and replaced her with some other girl they also booted.  Or was that Kim Deal?  I can never remember the deal with the Deals.  But back to Frank Black.  He’s one of those guys that I would pretty much buy anything he puts out.  Jack White would be the other.  In fact, I have often thought that Frank Black and Jack White should make an album together and do a tour.  They could call it the . . . something . . . Frank and Jack Tour?  Meh, I’m sure they could think of something catchy.

17.  "Dark Again" - Gold Fields

Good grief, there are a lot of newbies on this countdown.  What was I doing this year?  I never have this many new artists, especially in a year when everyone I have loved came out with a new record.  This is one of those songs that gets stuck in your head and you can’t get it out.  I decided to forgo therapy and just admit that I liked the song.  But come on, Gold Fields?  You couldn’t come up with something better than that?  You’re on a list with a band what calls themselves Catfish and The Bottlemen and you can’t come up with something better than Gold Fields.  And that’s why you’re number 17.

16.  "Get Me Golden" - Terraplane Sun

I don’t know any of their other stuff.  But this song reminds me a lot of something you might hear from Foster The People.  Maybe.  I’m listening to it right now, and I’m trying to figure out what to compare it to.  I like it a lot and I hope to hear more from them soon so I can tell whether or not they have staying power.  Again though, Terraplane Sun?  Yawn.  What about Buzzkill Biscuit?  Or Chasing Chuck Norris?  Or Rush?  Something jazzy.  We need better marketing people doing these band names.

15.  "Heavy Bells" - J. Roddy Walston and The Business

Now that’s a band name I can get into.  Also, this song rocks my stupid face off.  I love how Mr. Walston gets a little screamy with the chorus.  And the rocking guitar and heavy drum beat.  These guys have something going here.  It almost sounds like they stepped out of a classic rock radio station and told everyone, “Hey, let us remind you guys what rock is.”  And then they played this song and everyone was reminded.  And they all lived happily ever after.  The End.

14.  "Land of Gathering" - The Ceremonies

I can see this being one of those one-hit wonder deals.  I don’t want to judge anyone too prematurely or harshly, but they are pretty much worthless after this.  Nowhere to go but down.  Actually, I keed.  But as much as I like this song, I haven’t listened to anything else they’ve done.  I accidentally heard this song one morning on the way to work, and it’s been in the rotation since like September or something.  Really fun song to sing along to.

13.  "Ready To Go" - Guards

I saw this song on a commercial.  I can’t remember what commercial, but I heard this song on the radio one morning, and I am pretty sure I saw a family running on a cruise ship and laughing.  Call me crazy, but if this song isn’t on a cruise line commercial, someone is missing out on an opportunity.  This actually sounds like one of those songs where they got together and said, “Ok, guys.  We need some money and Carnival needs a song.  Let’s get this done.”  And they did.  And I like it.  Makes me wish I knew someone who plays the bells, because the drum part is super easy.

12.  "Demon To Lean On" - Wavves

There's a trend developing in the "biz" in which a guy comes up with a great band name and can't find anyone to be in his band, so he goes solo and keeps the band name.  I think it's deceptive.  I already have trust issues, people.  I don't need this kind of pressure.  But I do like this song. 

11.  "Cayucos" - Cayucas

I saw this song on some Windows commercial, which knocked it out of the top ten.  Not because anyone is selling out, but because I hate Windows.  I keed.  But for serious, if Beck and The Beach Boys had a baby, it would be this guy.  This is apparently another one of those "bands" that is really one guy.  I'm guessing his name is like Mike Cayucas or something.  Perhaps Brian?

10.  "Rango" - Catfish and The Bottlemen

If I had two more weeks to do this list, I'm certain this song would make it into the top five.  I don't know much about these guys except I think they're British and they kind of sound like The Kooks.  Also, there is a rumor that they will be touring with The Fratellis when they come to Houston.  Actually, I just made that up.  But it's now officially a rumor.

9.   "Diana" - One Direction

First of all, I apologize for nothing.  I cannot explain it.  I stopped trying to.  I like One Direction.  I like this song.  I am neither ashamed nor proud, but it is what it is.  I learned to not care what people think about my musical choices from my friend Ed.  If a song is good, don't apologize for liking it.  So there.  I don't care what you guys think.  It's not like I'm a huge fan and know anything about them.  But seriously . . . what's up with Harry's fro?  Run a comb through it, son.  

8.   "Safe and Sound" - Capital Cities

Bought the whole album based on this one song.  What can I say?  I'm a wild man.  I also live my life with a great deal of regret.  This is one of those times.  I keed.  I just don't feel like this song is a good representative of the entirety of the album.  In other words, ladies and gentlemen, meet your 2013 version of Foster The People.  Good song though.

7.   "Sugar Dyed Honey Pants" - St. Paul and the Broken Bones

This was a strong candidate for the top spot for a long time.  That lets you know how much I like these guys.  Oh, and the lead singer with those killer pipes looks like a 12 year old.  I think they're going places.  I will buy all their stuff.  I could listen to this song all day and never get tired of it.

6.   "Diane Young" - Vampire Weekend

I know this is easy.  But this is my favorite song on the new album.  Vampire Weekend is always going to be in my top 12 favorite bands.  And this song just gets me dancing, much to the delight of the car next to me at the stop light.  And in keeping with the rest of their material, I have no idea what they're talking about during any of it.

5.   "Song For Zula" - Phosphorescent

Probably the most beautifully written song of the countdown.  Another one of those guys using a last name as a band name.  Pretty sure his last name is VAN Phosphorescent though.  Guess he didn't want to get confused with Van Morrison or . . . Fleetwood Mac or whatever.  There's one line in here that I believe goes, "You see the cage, it called.  I said "Come on in."  I will not open myself up this way again."  And I just want to say, "Clifford Van Phosphorescent . . . who hurt you?"

4.   "Damage" - Jimmy Eat World

Favorite band with favorite album of 2013 and favorite song off that album.  I waited so patiently for a new album and they did not disappoint.  Seriously, if you've ever been dumped and you're not listening to Jimmy Eat World, you are missing out on some very reasonably-priced therapy.  Some bands just know how to put complete songs together: catchy melodies, tasty hooks, deep lyrics and all of it brought together through Jim Adkins' powerful, emotional voice.  Seriously . . . I should have put this at number one.  

3.   "Sea of Love" - The National

I only started listening to The National a couple years ago when my friends Kevin Norwood and Sam Greer got me hooked.  "Bloodbuzz Ohio" was number 7 on this list that year (2010).  Matt Berninger may have my current favorite voice in music.  Not many rock and rollers out there with a baritone on lead vocals.  This song makes me all melancholy and such.  And that's not a bad thing necessarily.  There is seriously no difference in the top five songs.  Any of them could be, and have been, number one on other days.  The point is, they're all good, and The National is another band that I'm late to the party for, but enjoying the leftover hors 'derves.  That's stupid.  Sorry.  Let's move on.

2.   "This Old Ghost Town" - The Fratellis

I dare you to listen to this song and not dance.  I am 99% certain it cannot be done.  Comparisons have been made to “Brown Eyed Girl.”  Sorry, but I don’t hear it.  Ok, that’s a lie.  I just don’t care.  This song is so much fun, as is all of The Fratellis stuff.  And on that note, Fratellis, please come to Houston so I can go to your show and apologize for the “Brown Eyed Girl” people.  Their new album is my favorite of 2013. 

1.   "Miracle Mile" - Cold War Kids

“Dear Miss Lonelyhearts” is my favorite album of 2013.  I have always loved CWK, but they took it to a new level this year.  Seriously, this was the year of Cold War Kids for me.  For one, I got to see them live after failing three other times.  Worth the drive to Dallas, mainly because Matt drove, but also because it was an awesome show.  If I sat around long enough, I could make a case for several other songs (including “Tuxedos” and “Bottled Affection”) being my favorite off the new album.  But this is the first song I heard off the new record, and I fell in love.  And I just absolutely love Nathan Willett’s voice.  So powerful and soulful.  And when he belts out “I’d be alright if I could just see you” it almost brings tears to my eyes.  He makes every song seem personal for me.  And, as Matt pointed out, I’ve never seen a front man wear a polo at a concert.  So there’s that.

Welcome To The Circus . . . Your 2013 Miami Dolphins

I'm a Dolphins fan, still.

If you haven't heard the details coming out about this Richie Incognito story, keep up the good work.  I wish it would go away.  Check that, I wish it never would have happened, and by that I mean I wish the Dolphins never would have signed Richie Incognito in the first place.  But that's neither here nor there.  I simply just don't want questionable character guys on my team.  I can sleep much easier being a loser with good guys on the team, than winning with a bunch of jerks (and worse).

If you don't know Richie's history, you should look it up.  If you don't know the facts of the story (as they are being told right now), you should look it up.  It's all over the place.  I'm not going to rehash the story.  I'm merely giving my take on what's going on.  That's it.  It's a guess, which is all anyone else is doing right now.  The truth, in its entirety, may never surface.  As Adam Shefter said last night, "In any story like this, there are really three sides.  He said, he said and the truth, which is somewhere in the middle."  That's probably the case here.  But I'm going to speculate as to what I think is going on based on what I know, and knowing what it's like when a group of guys are together all the time and bag on each other without mercy.

A college dorm is the closest I've ever been to life in an NFL locker room.  I'm not saying it's the same, but it's the same principle.  There are guys who become a family and they rip on each other all the time.  They prank each other.  One of my roommates used to think it was funny to light bottle rockets and toss them into the shower while I was in there.  Hilarious.  But that's how guys operate.  And we say stuff to each other that is way outside the realm of good taste.  Guys pick at each other, and someone always crosses the line.  And that's what I think happened here.

You can disagree and that's ok.  I'm just saying in my experience, we could say some really mean things to each other and know that if we weren't such good friends, we could never get away with that.  The problem is that not everyone could take it, or could only take so much for so long.  Then, if someone crossed the line and you didn't say anything or fight back, it continued, with the thinking be that everything was ok.  I do believe that's what happened here.  I could be wrong and the evidence may come out to blow my theory out of the water.  But as of right now, that's what I believe happened.

Now, under no circumstances would I use the language Incognito did.  I believe the "n" word is off-limits, and I think anyone who uses it is a racist.  And I get that there are circumstances where a white guy and a black guy are closer than brothers and that word is ok between them.  That's between them.  I'm standing by what I said.  I hate the word and wish racial slurs of all forms were wiped from our vocabularies.  The voice mail Richie left is particularly incriminating, if for no other reason than because the context is missing.  I don't believe Richie was going to slap his mother or kill him or defecate in his mouth.  Again, this is crude language to say the least.  But guys rip on each other, and I've definitely heard worse.

That being said, we live in a culture where bullying is taken seriously at all levels, as it should be.  I just think that Martin tried to keep it all to himself and he ended up just reaching his breaking point.  I cannot believe that if coaches and higher ups in the organization had known the depth of what was going on with Martin that they wouldn't have done anything.  There are attorneys on retainer who get paid big money for keeping companies out of dangers like this.  Listen to what the other Dolphins players are saying.  None of them are saying this is bullying.  Every interview I've heard is that everyone got the same treatment and it was nothing out of the ordinary for what goes on with a football team.  I'm not saying I condone any of it.  I just get it.  I've got other opinions, but it doesn't matter.  I hope I never see either of these guys in a Dolphins uniform again.  Richie is an idiot and Martin is a quitter.  And I believe that no matter what evidence comes out after this, I will always see them through that lens.  And once again, the Dolphins are a laughing stock, but this time it's more embarrassing than 1-15 ever was.
